SIKANDAR BAGH

Historic Sikanderbagh, a testament to the rich culture of Lucknow stands at a throughfare of Lucknow- Hazratganj, in the hustle and bustle of various central and state government offices. Built by Wajid Ali Shah, the last King of Oudh, this magnificent garden complex was dedicated to his beloved Sikander Begum. Completed in 1853 at a staggering cost of 5 lakhs rupees, Sikanderbagh boasted stunning architecture, including a central house, mosque, and three-domed masjid.

However, its beauty was soon marred by bloodshed. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, Sikanderbagh became a stronghold for Indian sepoys. On November 16, 1857, British forces under Sir Colin Campbell launched a brutal assault, breaching the walls and killing over 2,000 freedom fighters. The site bears witness to the devastating consequences of war.

Today, Sikanderbagh honors the memory of those who fought and died, including the courageous Uda Devi, a Dalit warrior woman who played a pivotal role in the uprising. This monument serves as a poignant reminder of India’s complex history and the struggles for independence.
